Surfaces
Barbara Kanegsberg
It all happens at the surface.
I am sometimes asked: why do you like to do critical and industrial cleaning?
With all due respect to all of you fine mechanical and design engineers
as well as you product designers, the surface can be the most important
part
of the product. Optimizing the surface of the product is an ongoing
challenge. While surface contamination problems are aggravating,
frankly, solving
those contamination problems can be a lot of fun. Furthermore, I
think that great
deal of what is interesting in science and in life happens at the surfaces,
at the interfaces.
The reason that surfaces are so important and intriguing is that at
the surfaces, at the interfaces, things connect; there is interaction
and
communication.
Life
As a biologist, I am always fascinated by the way surfaces of cells
define the plant or animal. Cell walls and membranes delineate
boundaries, provide
a site for deposition, chemical and physical interaction, and sometimes
for passage of atoms and molecules in and out of the cell. This
passage or transport
in and out of cells is essential for cellular cooperation and for
higher organisms to function properly.
Cleaning
In working as “the cleaning lady, ” it is particularly satisfying
to see that small changes in surfaces can greatly improve the overall manufacturing
process and overall product performance.
Lean Manufacturing
For high quality, competitive, and economical product fabrication,
interchange of information must occur among groups within a
company and between organizations.
This is because, with complex products, cleaning and manufacturing
occurs at multiple stages in the build process.
Just as with higher organisms, organizations have to work together,
to communicate. These essential organizational interactions
occur at the
surfaces, at the
interfaces; and the interactions are by no means restricted
to engineers.
The fascination of regulations & patents
Given our involvement in surfaces and in interaction among
disciplines, we become involved in quite an assortment
of projects. In fact,
you might say
that we particularly enjoy unusual, multidisciplinary projects.
Patents and regulatory submissions, with the wonderful
mix of science, technology,
and
political chemistry, can be more engrossing than your average
best-seller (yes, this is probably the sign of a warped
personality – but it’s
true). You can read about some of our projects by navigating
to our website
and clicking on the “About Our Clients” and “Projects” buttons.
Problem project? Call us
If you need help on an unusual project, please send us
an email or give us a call. Perhaps we can help you crystallize
your
main project
goals.
We may
be able to help you directly. If we can’t, we’ll help you figure
out who you should be working with.
