Hand Book Reviews

"CRC Press...has just released a fabulous, 636 page overview of cleaning technology
which should be on the desk of anybody who is doing anything in the world of
precision cleaning....This review is a major effort to go beyond the typical
manufacturer's hype about their cleaning technology and define, in unbiased terms,
the good, the bad and the ugly of virtually every contending technology available
on the market today.... It is a compilation of new writings, manufacturer's technical
reports and some previously unpublished cleaning test results. It attempts, as
best anyone could do, to compare all of the different precision cleaning technologies
and highlight their varying strengths and weaknesses. The scope of the book is
breath-taking: from water cleaning, through solvent cleaning, to plasma, carbon
dioxide and even steam cleaning, everything gets dissected under the harsh light
of stringent and unvarnished side-by-side comparisons.
...The "Review of Solvents" by John Agopovich is particularly useful as it
includes many definitions of terms, regulations and alternative sources which
help less sophisticated users weave their way through the alphabet-soup of
precision cleaning (OSHA, SNAP, HAP, ODS, VOC, HFE, nPB -- need any more examples?).
Here's just one example of the utilitarian nature of this work: it also presents
a consistent table of physical properties for each solvent, allowing straightforward
comparisons between the different alternatives. Trying doing that with 20 product
spec sheets from ten different manufacturers! Importantly, the book also includes
old-style solvents which aren't often seen in the electronics industry today,
such as perc, methylene chloride and tricholorethylene. This balance (historically
speaking, as well as it terms of costs) helps a reader to put all the different
capabilities and claims into perspective.
... it is fair to say that the Kanegsbergs are probably the only two individuals
we know in this industry -- so involved, so unbiased, so well-informed, so
trusted by so many vendors -- who could have had the balance and the perspective
to assemble this Handbook. If you are cleaning, you MUST get this book."
Edward Scott, AMETEK Rotron
"Great book! I just read chapter 6.2 and it was just what I wanted to know..."
Michael Alderete, The Boeing Company
"Had some nasty cleaning issues all this week, and the Handbook has come in handy."
Murray Steigman, Engineer
" ...It was worth the price of admission! In a succinct and eminently readable
text, I found an authoritative introduction to the art and pitfalls of the cleaning
process.... I am grateful to the Kanegsbergs for their work in the publication
of this useful addition to my reference shelf."
Diana Dundee, Materials and Process Engineer, Honeywell Canada
"I find this Handbook to be a truly comprehensive manual and a valuable aid for
both the experienced and beginning practitioner involved this subject matter.
The handbook gives the reader an intelligent and in-depth treatment of the various
types of cleaning agents and associated cleaning equipment without providing
too much of an exhaustive treatise on any material. I particularly liked that
I can find information on all of the recommended cleaners and processes in one
book. I would refer to this Handbook as a 'cleaner's companion.'"
